About the record
Released in 1969, Santana is the debut album from the band led by Carlos Santana and one of the defining records of the early Latin rock sound.
The album mixes rock, blues, jazz, Latin rhythms and extended instrumental passages, with Carlos Santana’s guitar at the centre of the sound. It includes classics such as Evil Ways, Jingo and Soul Sacrifice.
The record arrived just after Santana’s breakthrough performance at Woodstock, helping establish the band internationally. Its combination of electric guitar, organ and Latin percussion still gives it a distinctive sound more than five decades later.
The iconic black-and-white lion cover also makes this one of the most instantly recognisable Santana records.
A great LP for collectors of classic rock, Latin rock, psychedelic music and late-1960s vinyl.
